Betty Jean Footman

May 17, 1951 – February 1, 2018

Betty Jean Footman was born on May 17, 1951, in Richmond, VA, to Aeron Footman and the late Ann Elizabeth Footman. She departed this life on Wednesday, February 1, 2018. Betty accepted our Lord Savior Jesus Christ at an early age and was a long-time member of Shiloh Christian Fellowship, Stafford, VA. In 1953, Betty and her parents relocated from Richmond, VA to Washington, DC. She graduated from Cardoza High School; and, Betty was an avid reader of novels, and she also enjoyed conquering the most challenging gig-saw and word puzzles. Betty was outgoing and adventurous; she enjoyed listening to gospel, classical and opera music. She also loved attending plays, parades and just being in the company of family and friends.

In 2005, Betty retired as a Correctional Officer from the District of Columbia Jail while obtaining the rank of Corporal with over 22 years of public service. Betty was a workaholic; and, l1ad a passion for assisting others by volunteering her time to help feed and clothe those in need.  Betty leaves to cherish her memory: her father, Aeron Footman of Washington, DC; two sons, Maurice (Basseyanwan) Footman of Riverdale, MD, and Melvin Jones  Jr. of Washington, DC; three daughters, Daisel “Dee-Dee” Footman of Alexandria, VA; Velissa Jones of Springfield, VA,and   (Eric) Chapman of Woodbridge, VA; four brothers, Aeron “Butch” Footman II of Washington, DC, Lawrence “Larry” Footman of Suitland, MD, Andy, and Ricky Footman of Washington, DC; two sisters, Veronica “Ronnie” and Beverly Footman of Washington, DC; and nine grandchildren. Betty is also survived by several uncles and aunts, nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.  She is preceded in death by her mother and both her maternal and paternal Grandparents.
